The Intelligent Investor Rev Ed The Definitive Book on Value Investing

The original The Intelligent Investor was published in 1949 and is one of the greatest investments books ever written. The book is the bible of value investing and it has been a huge influence on Warren Buffett (worth over $102 billion dollars) and others. The book is very practical, based on a simple framework that anyone can use to become a better investor.

Benjamin Graham, a pioneer of value investing, developed the philosophy that investors should buy stocks below their “real” value. This strategy shields them from substantial error while still allowing them to focus on the business fundamentals.

This strategy has been used to beat the market time and time again over the decades. It has a very strong historical performance record and is still the most popular investment strategy in the world today.

However, there is a lot of misinformation out there about the value investing approach. This is why it is important to understand the fundamentals of value investing.

In this episode of the podcast, we’re going to take a closer look at some of the key ideas and principles of this classic book. We’ll also talk with a few of our favorite value investors to learn more about their backgrounds and experiences.

First, we’ll have our friend and fellow Columbian, Jenny Wallace! She’s the portfolio manager of Summit Street Capital Management and she’s a great expositor when it comes to value investing. She has a great approach to both her research and her mentorship. She’s a great addition to the Heilbrunn Center for Graham & Dodd Investing and has a very deep understanding of the value investing model.

Next, we’ll have a conversation with Jan Hummel of Paradigm Capital who has built his fund around a value investment philosophy and a hedging component to the portfolio. This is a great approach to value investing for those who like to have a little more control over their portfolios and hedging is an important part of the process.

Then, we’ll have a conversation with Michael Mauboussin who is the Director of Research at BlueMountain Capital Management and a leading academic when it comes to value investing. He is also an adjunct professor at Columbia Business School and has authored three books that I highly recommend!

In this episode, we’ll also talk with a couple of our favorite value investors about their journeys to become value investors and their approaches to portfolio construction. They’ll discuss why they became value investors, how they build their reputations and careers, how they go about building their portfolios, the importance of mentorship, the benefits of a defensive approach to investing, and so much more! We’ll also talk about the importance of being engaged with your investments and why this approach is a must for any successful value investor.
