The Pollution Control pdf involves preventing the escape into the environment of substances or energies that are harmful to living things. These may be derived from man-made activities or natural events, and they can be either biodegradable or non-biodegradable; they may have a single point of origin (point source pollution) or a dispersed distribution. The pollution control field also deals with energy efficiency and recycling initiatives that limit environmental damage.

Historically, human activity has caused environmental pollution worldwide in the form of dangerous solids, liquids, gases and even radioactivity. The term pollution typically refers to contaminants that have an anthropogenic origin – they are generated by human actions and originate from man-made sources such as manufacturing, mining, waste management, transportation and agriculture. They may have a single point of origin or be more widely dispersed; for example, the chemical DDT had a single point of origin but became dispersed globally and was eventually banned by the Montreal Protocol in 1987.

Major forms of environmental pollution include air, light and noise pollution. The former includes aerosols, ozone-depleting chemicals and greenhouse gases. The latter is associated with climate change, rising sea levels and droughts. Other forms of pollution include soil contamination (including toxic metal compounds, hydrocarbons and herbicides) or thermal pollution caused by industrial activity. The dumping of chemicals into watercourses can lead to the poisoning of aquatic ecosystems, while the releasing of carbon monoxide into the air binds to haemoglobin and restricts blood flow, resulting in seizures and heart attacks.
