A town of natural beauty and rich history, Fox Creek offers a serene wilderness experience combined with small-town family values, first class amenities, and a vibrant service centre for tourism, forestry and the active oil and gas industry. Located 74 km west of Whitecourt, Fox Creek was named after the creek that flows through the community. Originally the economy was based on logging, but in the 1950’s significant oil and natural gas reserves were discovered and this lead to an economic boom for the area.

The Fox River rises in southern Wisconsin, north of Milwaukee in a lake basin, then meanders south through Lake, McHenry, Kane and DuPage Counties to its confluence with the Illinois River. The Fox River has a long and colorful natural and cultural history and is renowned for its beautiful scenery, water quality and recreational opportunities.

In the 1800’s large scale grazing by open range livestock became common on the Fox Creek watershed. In 1920-1950 hydraulic mining in surrounding areas damaged many watersheds, but fortunately the Fox Creek watershed was not significantly affected.
