Description:
The Writing Retreat offers graduate students the opportunity to spend a block of time holed up at the Biological Station focused on writing. During this time, participants work on their thesis/dissertation/project by themselves or in small groups with peers to make significant progress on writing-related tasks such as writing up research data/findings/reports, journal articles or conference abstracts. Students are encouraged to consider preparing their writing-in-progress ahead of time so they have a clear idea of what they will accomplish during the retreat. This helps to ensure that they will be able to complete their work within the allotted time frame. The Writing Retreat will be most effective when students focus solely on their writing and avoid distractions such as phone, email and social media. To prepare for this retreat, students should: (a) decide on a writing goal/sub-goals such as particular sections of a paper/chapter and a specific number of words to write; (b) define and discuss their content and structure, and (c) take stock of achievement of their sub-goals throughout the retreat.
