The Drama of Glass PDF
The Drama of Glass PDF is a play that is written by Tennessee Williams. The play is classified under the genre of memory play and was premiered in the year 1944. The play was a success and it made Tennessee Williams one of America’s most highly regarded playwrights. The play was based on autobiographical elements and featured characters that resembled their creator. The histrionic mother and fragile sister were clearly modeled after Williams himself.
The play focuses on a family who struggles to support themselves due to the decline of the glass industry. The mother, Sylvia Gellburg, is the sole breadwinner of the household and has a difficult time keeping up with her work load while also caring for her paralyzed daughter. The sudden appearance of the daughter’s disability is further complicated by a world event, Kristallnacht, that has heightened anti-Semitic sentiments. This conflict, coupled with the breakdown of the marriage between Sylvia and Phillip, threatens the stability of the entire home.
While most glass is produced by melting sand, there are other forms of this ancient material that have evolved through the centuries. The earliest glass was a clear, colorless material that could be polished to a smooth finish. As the process of making glass became more refined, it developed into colored and frosted types of material. This material was later used to make windows, mirrors and lampshades.
