The Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) is an assessment of teachers’ subject knowledge and pedagogical content that can be taken at any stage in their career. It is a useful way of increasing holders’ confidence as teachers and can improve their job prospects.
TKT is based on the framework that is used for the CELTA and DELTA courses, which are aimed at teachers who want to teach English as a foreign or second language. It is designed to be taken by teachers of all levels of experience and may be taken independently or as part of a course.
This module tests candidates’ knowledge of the pedagogic choices that they have at their disposal to cater for learner characteristics, learning processes and the differences between L1 and L2 learning. It also tests their knowledge of concepts and terms related to teaching and learning procedures and activities, including assessment.
A variety of testing techniques can be effective in assessing students’ knowledge and skills. These include objective tasks, which focus on demonstrating memory and recall, as well as essay and open-ended problem-solving, which require more independent analysis and synthesis of information.
Despite the fact that teachers’ knowledge is often not fully understood or evaluated, there is considerable research on how to measure and model the knowledge of teachers for particular teaching subjects. Nevertheless, most studies have focused on only one school subject (e.g., mathematics or economics)
